How to Choose the Right Hospital in India: 7 Things to Check

India has thousands of private hospitals — and for an international patient, the difference between a good choice and a wrong one is enormous. Here is the checklist our medical team uses when shortlisting hospitals for Medico patients.

1. Accreditation is non-negotiable

Look for JCI (Joint Commission International) or NABH accreditation. These certify infection control, patient safety protocols and quality audits. Every hospital in the Medico network holds at least one of the two.

2. Surgeon volumes matter more than hospital fame

A surgeon who performs 300 knee replacements a year will usually deliver better outcomes than a famous hospital where your surgeon does 30. Always ask: how many procedures like mine does this specific doctor perform annually?

3. Check the ICU and emergency backup

For cardiac surgery, transplants and complex oncology, a dedicated ICU (cardiac ICU, transplant ICU) with 24/7 intensivists is what separates safe centres from risky ones.

4. International patient department

  • Dedicated coordinators who answer on WhatsApp
  • Interpreters for your language
  • Help with visa letters, airport pickup and accommodation
  • Experience with patients from your country

5. Transparent, itemised pricing

A reliable hospital gives a written package estimate that itemises surgeon fees, implants, ICU days and hospital stay — and states what is excluded. Verbal "all inclusive" promises are a red flag.

6. Outcomes and complication policies

Ask for success rates for your specific procedure and what happens — financially and medically — if there is a complication or readmission. Good centres answer plainly.

7. Distance from the airport and family logistics

After major surgery you will visit the hospital several times before flying home. Guest houses within walking distance, halal or familiar food nearby, and a short airport transfer genuinely matter.

How Medico applies this checklist

We maintain outcome and volume data on our partner hospitals and match you based on your diagnosis, budget and country — not on commissions. You receive 2–3 options with named surgeons, so you can compare and decide. See our partner hospitals →
