Indian Medical Visa: A Step-by-Step Guide for Patients

The medical visa is usually the easiest part of the journey — when you know the steps. Here is exactly what happens, in order, from your first message to landing in India.

Step 1: Get your hospital invitation letter

You cannot apply without an appointment/invitation letter from a recognized Indian hospital. Medico arranges this within 48 hours of your treatment quote — it names you, your diagnosis and the treating hospital.

Step 2: Prepare your documents

• Passport valid at least 6 months with 2 blank pages
• The hospital invitation letter
• Recent medical reports supporting the treatment
• Proof of funds for treatment and stay
• Passport-size photographs per the embassy specification

Step 3: Apply online or at the embassy

Most nationalities apply through the Indian government e-visa portal or at the local Indian mission. Processing typically takes a few working days; urgent medical cases can often be fast-tracked with the hospital letter.

Step 4: Attendant visas for family

One or two family members can apply for MED-X attendant visas linked to your medical visa — they travel with you and stay for the same duration.

Step 5: After you land

The medical visa is normally granted for up to 60 days with triple entry and can be extended in India on the treating hospital’s recommendation — important for transplants and long oncology protocols.
